A sales girl in her late twenties has sustained gunshot injury from armed robbers who invaded her shop in broad daylight along the ever busy Afikpo street by Ezioweri Street in Abakaliki the Ebonyi state capital.
The lady who sells Foam gave her name as Miss Monica Oginyi.
Narrating her ordeal to newsmen at her hospital bed she said the armed robbers who operated in a motorcycle ordered her at gun point to surrender a large sum of money she made from her sales.
According to Miss Oginyi, “Rather than hand over the money, I decided to confront the gunman which prompted him to shoot me at my lower shoulder.”
According to her, in spite of the gun shot, i summoned the courage to seize him and in the process both of us fell into a gutter. Before the robbers came, I had already given my colleague money to go and deposit in the bank”.
“It was when the other girl had left that the armed robber came and asked how much I sell foam, in the process, he brought out a gun and asked me to surrender the money I had sold and as I brought out the money, he pushed me and the money fell on the ground.
” When he made to pick the money, that was when I pounced on him and we started struggling but unfortunately, he pushed me and I fell down, that was when he now tried to shoot me on the head but the bullet hit me on the shoulder.”
Miss Monica said the gunman would have been arrested if on-lookers and passers by had assisted her when she was shouting and struggling with the robber, but no help came.
“None of the on-lookers or passers-by could confront the other robber that came with him who was outside on the bike. It was when he shot at me that he ran outside quickly, jumped on a waiting motorcycle and they zoomed off.”
An Eyewitness who did not give her name described the incident as shocking noting that they never new the gunman was an armed robber.
When newsmen arrived the scene of the incident, there was atmosphere of fear and uncertainty with many asking for police presence in area.
When contacted, The Police Public Relations Officer in Ebonyi state, Mrs Loveth Oda said the matter had not been reported to her office and promised to brief the press on the incident. Ends.
