The appointment of Toni Kan, an alleged opposition party supporter by Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Umar Farouq, has provoked the ire of the ruling APC members as they raucously call for the move to be reversed.

Ms. Farouq had appointed Kan as her Spokesperson.

Kan, a prominent Nigerian writer, had in the past penned blistering critique of the Buhari administration, much as he had made his preference for Atiku, President Buhari’s rival in the last presidential election, unmistakably apparent.

The ruling party’s youth wing known as ‘The APC Vanguard’ has since started to mobilise members against the appointment.

The body wonders why Ms. Farouq sidlined droves of qualified APC members, saying the appointment of people like Kan into the federal government explains why the administration is grappling with issues of leakages of sensitive official documents to the public.

They argue that Toni Kani has strong ties with the opposition party, PDP and that his appointment will be counterproductive.

Kan, has however, defended himself, tasking his adversaries to supply proofs of his membership and ties to the Nigeria’s main opposition party, PDP.

This is not the first time an outcry such as this has forced the the administration to terminate appointments.

In June 2019, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan rescinded the appointment of Festus Adedayo as his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity because APC supporters rejected him for being a trenchan critic of the Buhari-led administration.

The same fate befell Seun Onigbinde, who was appointed in September of the same year by President Buhari as a Technical Adviser in the Ministry of Budget and National Planning.
