Lecturers and Non Academic Staffs of the Abia State College Of Education (Technical) Arochukwu, was earlier today, engaged on a peaceful protest against non-payment of their thirty one months (31) salary arrears.
The lecturers drawn from all the faculties in the institution disclosed their heartfelt grievances including continuous sack and retrenchment of College workers without a meaningful reason, non implementation of salary structure (Compcass) upon enactment since 2011.
Former students of the institutions, family members, and students of the college joined the peaceful protest, insisting that government’s continued indebtedness to the staffs of the college, especially after the enactment of their real salary structure should be implemented.
Some of the placards bore inscriptions such as “Enough Is Enough; Our staffs Deserve Better Treatment, Pay ASCETA their 31 months salaries; we can’t feed one square meal, our Landlord is on our neck, Our Luggages are now packed outside, Our Children Are being sent out of School, Hungry is killing us Please Pay us Salaries and Governor Ikpeazu Ease Our Pains And Save The Education Sector, among others.
The COEASU Chairman, Mr. Egesi Kevin said, our condition in ASCETA is disheartening, we can’t boost of one square meal on the table of our families, sending our children to school has now become a great nightmare, we are not proud enough to proclaim that Education is the key again because our Government has changed the padlock.
“We condemn the attitude of the governor towards the staffs. How can we survive with this our situation, just last week, one of the mathematician Lecturers died of hunger and many are still following the lane.
He, however, appealed to the governor to come to the rescue of the staff of the college before they will all die of hunger, severe hardship and unable to cater for their families, reminding him that he is also an educationist.
Mr. Kevin stated that the protests would continue next week Thursday until their salaries are fully paid.
Speaking on behalf of the Non Academic Staffs is Mr. Daniel who said that the staffs had resolved to continue the protest until Governor Ikpeazu did the needful, noting that they are presently living in pains and anguish.
“It is unfortunate we are in a country where Government don’t appreciate people’s effort, mostly when it comes to Education.
Violators are rather placed on payrolls and are paid every month, while nobody cares about the law-abiding citizens.
“No fewer than 8 staffs have died so far from non-payment of salaries. Governor Ikpeazu should come to our rescue,” he said.
As at the time of filing this report, our correspondent Nnadozie Victor disclosed that, upon reaching the Local Government Headquarters in Arochukwu, the chairman was not on seat, but not withstanding, they dropped a message for him disclosing that they have earlierd issued out an official later before embarking on this peaceful protest.
The Protestants however moved to the Arochukwu devisional police station, where they met the D.P.O and dropped a message for him to communicate to the Governor.
The COEASU Chairman led the Protestants to D.S.S office in Arochukwu where they also met the officer on seat, who expressed pity concerning the state of ASCETA workers and promised to communicate to the Governor in earnest.
Mr. Egesi Kevin told our correspondent that they have been obstructed several times upon any attempt embarking on protest.
He said, they have continue telling us to calm down, insuring us that they will do something but up till now nothing has been done, anytime we plan for protest, they will give us one reason or the other and ask us to calm down. The other time, they told us that the Governor travelled but once back he will pay us. The truth is that we are fed up with all these audio promises, the Government is not doing us well. We are out now and nothing will take us back untill our salaries are being paid, we will continue our protest to Umuahia by next week, if they want to shoot us, let them do because dead men are now better than us, if they want to close this institution they should better do.
Please we call on the attention of Abia State Government to come to the aid of ASCETA workers before they all die of hunger.
